Wood-Duck Effigy Bowl

Hello everyone!

Teacher Therese here. I hope everyone is having a great day. Today we are learning about the Wood-Duck Effigy bowl.

Introduction:

An effigy is a statue. This particular relic was found near Moundville, Hale County, Alabama (Middle Mississipian). This dates back to A.D. 1250-1500. This particular bowl was made out of stone.

The bowl dates back about 600 years ago and was made by our Native American ancestors. They lived in the Southeastern part of the United States. Archaeologists found this relic.

What are archaeologists?

Archaeologists are scientists who study human history and prehistory. They excavate sites, analyze the artifacts they find and other remains they may find.

You could put some water into the bowl. I am not sure what the bowl is for, but I think this particular bowl may have been used during ceremonies.

Would it be possible to drink out of this bowl?

Yes, it would be possible to drink out of the bowl, but I think it would be pretty difficult since it might be very heavy.

Could you use this bowl to pour liquids out of?

Yes, you could pour liquids out of the bowl, but because it is pretty solid it might be heavy.

The duck’s wings are etched with black charcoal looking lines.

Can you find the duck’s tail?

The duck tail is at the edge of the bowl on the left hand side of the image.

Does This Look Like a Real Duck:

Does the duck on the bowl look like a real duck?

I do not think the duck bowl looks like a real duck, but it looks pretty close to a real duck.

Why or why not does it look like a real duck?

It does not look like a real duck because it does not have properly etched wings.

Which parts of the duck look real and which parts of the duck do not look real?

I think the head of the duck looks pretty real, but the rest of the body is not very artistically developed so it does not look real.

About Decoration:

How would you decorate something if you could not use color?

I think you could carve the object and use etching to decorate an object.

Point to and describe the different kinds of lines on the bowl.

The duck has lines that are carved on the duck’s head and the side of the bowl. There are also lines that are black and look like they were drawn on with charcoal.
