Dare to Be Different in Photography Video

The photos I used in the video that are my own photographs that I took:

The script to the video:

Hello Therese Lawlor here. I found a quote on Google. The quote is, “Dare to be different. The world is full of ordinary.” Photography is one of those majors or jobs where you have to be different because you can’t be ordinary. It’s art. It is something that people will look at and be like, “Okay is this something that’s grabbing my attention or is this boring because it’s ordinary. I’ve seen it a million times.” You really have to be thinking outside of the box constantly. You have to view your subject matter in a different light.

It’s easy take the standard photograph and find a photograph that you like online and copying that. It’s one thing to be inspired by a photograph that you find online and emulate that, but you don’t want to copy the same thing, especially shots that have been done over and over again. Try to look at your subject matter in different angles. Take lots and lots of pictures. The more pictures you take the better you’ll be able to pick out the right one. When you first take a photo of let’s say a flower your instant thing that you want to do is to take that picture that’s like this flower looks pretty. It looks fresh and beautiful and it’s awesome.

Yes, that’s you know your main thing that you want to do first. Then after a while of taking the same pictures over and over where it’s just pretty you decide maybe I need it in a different angle and would this angle look beautiful? Then you turn your flower at a different angle and you take unique photographs because it’s a different angle and it’s not like an ordinary photo where everything is so perfect. You kind of have lines working with each other. The focal point is not in the center. It could be a little bit to the right or a little bit to the left or it’s cropped so close that it’s not like oh this is calla lily. It’s like oh it’s lines and it’s beautiful and it’s elegant and graceful, but it is still a calla lily. It isn’t like right in your face this a calla lily. It’s more abstract and it’s more shapes. That’s what I’ve done with my calla lily photographs. I’ve gotten really close up to them. The same with the rose.

The other thing too is if you’re working with models like with people you want to try to get you know like a photograph of them where you are getting more of their emotions and it’s not just this person look she’s posing for me. She’s pretty. It’s not that. You want to get your model in like a look that is more natural for them and it really says a lot.

One thing that you want to do is try to put your model at ease and have them be more themselves. Yes pose them a little bit, but have them get into the zone of posing on their own and having them act different and capturing their side that’s a little bit different from other people. You want to show the people as how they are and what makes them unique is them being them. Yes, “Dare to be different the world is full of ordinary.” Thanks for watching bye.

Make Changes in Your Photography Work Video

Check out my video about my quote of the day about change.

Here are the photos I used in the video that are my own photography work.

The script of the movie:

Hello everyone Therese Lawlor here. I found this quote on Google and it says, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” It is a quote by Socrates.

One of the things that I really fought when I was first starting out as a photography major at Rochester Institute of Technology was Photoshop. I really didn’t want to learn Photoshop. I started learning photography with black and white photography like most people do. I was using the darkroom to process my film and then making prints of my photographs from my negatives. That was fun for me. I loved going to the dark room. I liked making all of these prints and just hanging out there and having a lot of fun with classmates. I didn’t want to be in the computer labs doing Photoshop work with my photographs. I just thought it was so hard. I thought why do I have to edit it? It looks good.

After a while, I decided to get my own computer and learn more of Photoshop and not have to spend time at the computer labs. That’s when things really changed for me. I was able to do Photoshop work on my own, in my room and just really focus. I was too distracted at the computer labs to learn Photoshop. I really think that being at home with my computer helped my work.

Now I absolutely love Photoshop and I couldn’t do photography without Photoshop. I’ve never ever posted a photograph on social media or my blogs that I didn’t edit first. There’s always some sort of improvement I can make with any of my photographs. Photoshop has now become a strength of mine and I love building on that new strength. Photoshop has been my key to really loving my photographs because I can edit them to perfection. Now it’s so easy to turn my bad photographs into good photographs with the use of Photoshop. Having that ease of mind helps me take photographs every day.

I think that if you end up doing photography as a major the first thing you should do is get a camera, the second thing right away is get a computer and get Photoshop. I mean that’s standard now, but some people choose to not get their own stuff right away. I think they make you do that now at colleges though. Yes, it’s something to really get into.

iPhoto was also great for me. I loved using that to edit. There’s now Photos on Apple computers instead of iPhoto. I haven’t really done editing using Photos. With Photos, you can adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, etcetera. Photos is a great tool with editing photos, but it is for beginners. If you want to be able to make complicated adjustments like selecting parts of a photo and then pasting it then you would need Photoshop.

I also suggest trying out different cameras. I don’t really do that right now. I’m not a big fan of doing that because I can’t afford to get a medium format or 4 by 5 digital camera, but I would love to. When I was starting out as a photography major I took photographs with 35mm film cameras and then I went to medium format film cameras and that was very different and then to 4 by 5 film cameras. I really didn’t like changing from 35 mm to medium format or 4 by 5, but later on I ended up loving it. You really get better detail the larger the format of your camera is. It’s important to try to do that.

I was looking at Hasselblad.com. It is the Hasselblad camera site. I was looking at the photographs they were showcasing. You can go to a link that is about the winners. Masters 2018 Hasselblad—and the photos are just amazing. They are super gorgeous. Some of them are so awesome and the details are magnificent. You could see the fine details of this one image so clearly. It was of a blonde girl and you could see every single strand of her hair and the photograph really highlighted her unique haircut. It’s just really nice to see that so yes. Check it out and that is it. Thanks for watching. Bye.
